Planet Tutorial

before we start you will have to download this Texture for the planet so just Right-click
on the picture below and save it to your computer. So if you ever get stuck just take a look
at the pictures below each step.

1. Create a new Document 900 pixels wide and 800 pixels high also set the resolution to
100 pixels/inch, just look at the picture for help.

2. Press Crtl + I to invert the white background to black, next go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise.
Set it to the following Amount: 400%, Gaussian and Monochromatic clicked on. The picture explains
everything.

3. Next we're just going to add a small Guassian so go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set
the Radius to 1.5 pixels, Click OK.

4. OK, now we're going to make the background look more like stars for our planet we're making
later on it the tutorial, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels or press Ctrl + L. Set the left number
to 170 and the right number to 219 leave the middle number as 1.00 press OK.

5. Now we need that texture we got you to get at the beginning. So go to File > Open and find
where you saved it and open it, it will open in a new document so just select it (Ctrl + A) then
copy it into your document (Ctrl + C) to copy and (Ctrl + V) to paste.
6. When you paste the texture in, it will create a new layer. Select the Elliptical Marquee
Tool.

7. Hold Shift and create a circle in the middle of the texture, then press (Ctrl + Shitft + I)
to inverse the selection and press Delete. The press(Ctrl + Shitft + I)to Select back onto the
Texture, now go to Filter > Distort > Spherize and set it to 100%. Make sure your still have the
circle selected before you Spherize.

8. Now do the same thing Filter > Distort > Spherize but this time set it to only 50%. Now
go to Image > Adjustments > Color Balance or (Ctrl + B).Look at pictures below to see what to
set it at or you can create your own color for the planet using the Color Balance Menu.



9. Now duplicate the planet layer (Right-click on the layer to select Duplicate Layer).
Now select the layer below the layer you just duplicated and make it with 0% fill.

10. Time to add some glow behind this planet, Right-click on the layer you have selected
and go to Blending Options. Go to the Outer Glow option first and set it similar to the picture
below the color number I used is (1cf1e4), do the same for inner glow as well. You can use any
color you want and change anything as well, be creative.



11. Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), select the new layer also make sure your colors
are set to black and white. Fill the new layer with black using the Paint Bucket Tool (G).
Now goto Filter > Render > Clouds.

12. This will be kinda of a haze for the planet. Right-Click on the layer you just made
and click on Create Clipping Mask. Then set the layer mode to screen and Opacity around
70%.

13. Create a new layer and grab the brush and paint black on the planet to represent the
shadow from the sun. It doesn't have to be tidy.Just look at the picture below if your
confused.

14. Now we want to put a Gaussian Blur on the shadow, so goto
Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the radius to around 30 pixels or whatever looks
best to you.

15. Here's my finished product:
